Navigating the Utilization page

The Utilization page gives an overview of how efficiently your assets and fuel are used between the time the engine is turned on and off. Using this data, you can identify your top performers and your worst performers.

You can set and view target values and address asset utilization as needed. When you know how and when your assets are being utilized, you can make decisions that help you better utilize your assets. For example, you can determine which underutilized assets can be moved to different sites instead of renting equipment to finish jobs.

In List view, Utilization can be switched into Select mode, which lets you select multiple assets with minimal effort. Selecting one asset check box switches the Utilization page into Select mode. While the page is in Select mode, you can quickly select:

  • all assets
  • all assets that have been loaded
  • individual assets

Note – Select mode is dismissed when you select Actions bar / Cancel Selection or Close. To clear selections while remaining in Select mode, select Actions bar / Deselect All or Select All.

After selecting assets, you can generate reports or set target values. Target values help you identify assets idling above thresholds and assets performing at levels that reduce profitability. See Setting Target Runtime and Idling values.

You can view the Utilization page in either List view (default) or Graph view:

ClosedConfiguring the List view

  1. Select Actions bar / Settings and include the columns you want to see and exclude the columns you don't want to see. Some columns are required.
  2. Optionally, sort columns by selecting column headers (for example, Idle Time). You can sort some columns by sub-headers (for example, you can sort Idle Time by Hours, Idle %, or Target). The active sort in the List view is also applied in the Graph view.

Note – The Fuel Utilization Totals row is useful for viewing average fuel consumed per asset per day:

  • Totals row indicates the totals for all assets, not just the assets currently in view.
  • If you select assets, then the totals are shown just for the selected assets in the Selected: section.
  • Where applicable, total values and average values per asset are displayed.
  • Where applicable, average daily values per asset are displayed.

Note – The asset's time zone appears in the Latest Utilization Report field in the Utilization page and the Reported Time field in Utilization Details.

Note – The Utilization page displays N/A in Working- and Idle-based columns associated with data from assets that meet the following criteria:

  • Manufacturer: Caterpillar®
  • Product Family: Wheel tractor scrapers
  • Model: 600 series ending in 7 (627, 637, 657, etc.)
  • Device Type: PL321, PL522, 523
  • Work Definition set to Engine-Sourced

Note – You can sort assets by callouts in Utilization. This feature enables you to sort incorrectly reporting assets or assets with other issues to the top of the Utilization page so you can easily select and interact with them.

ClosedConfiguring the Graph views

  1. Select View Graphs.
  2. Select Actions bar / Graph Settings.
  3. Select the graph label (Serial Number is default).
  4. Select the Info window settings.

ClosedWhat you need to know about the Idle % / Working %, Runtime Hours, and Distance Traveled graphs

The Idle % / Working % and Distance Traveled graphs display a dotted line for the average values for the paged assets for the selected date range. The Runtime Hours graph is split by a bar that separates Idle time from Working time. Runtime The Runtime Hours are superimposed on top of Idle and Working values. Assets that do not report Idle Hours display a lightly shaded bar.

If you have set target values, you can see at a glance how your assets have performed against the target values for the date range. The difference between actual hours and target values is indicated by color bars. Actual hours above target values are indicated by a darker gradient. Actual hours below target values are indicated by a lighter gradient.

ClosedWhat you need to know about Cumulative, Total Hours, Total Fuel Burned, Idle % Trend, and Fuel Burn Rate Trend graphs

The info window displays the number of assets used for the calculations to give insight into how reporting assets are utilized (and in Fuel Graphs, how efficiently fuel is burned for assets with active fuel subscriptions).

Assets must have active subscriptions for their utilization data to be included in the graphs.

  • Cumulative — The cumulative graphs indicate the overall Hours and Fuel Burned for the fleet in the given date range. Daily average values are per day, cumulative numbers for the fleet. The days considered for the average calculation in the respective graphs are the days when the asset has actively reported runtime hours and fuel burned.
  • Cumulative Runtime, Working, and Idle hours reported for the specified date range. The Runtime hours portion includes runtime hours for assets that cannot report Idle vs. Working hours.
  • Cumulative Runtime, Working, and Idle Fuel Burned reported for the specified date range. The Runtime fuel burned portion includes runtime fuel burned for assets that cannot report Idle vs. Working fuel burned.
  • Total Hours — Total Runtime, Working, and Idle hours reported by the fleet for the specified date range in Day view, Week view, and Month view.
  • Total Fuel Burned — Total fuel burned per Runtime, Working, and Idle hours reported by the fleet for the specified date range in Day view, Week view, and Month view.
  • Idle % Trend — A time line view of the overall Idling percentage reported by the fleet for the specified date range in Day view, Week view, and Month view. This information is helpful for identifying trends of under-utilization over time.
  • Fuel Burn Rate Trend — A time line view of the overall Fuel Burn Rate reported by the fleet for the specified date range in Day view, Week view, or Month view. This information is helpful for identifying trends of excessive fuel burn over time.

You can toggle on and off Runtime, Working, or Idle values to focus on data of interest. The graphs respect selected filters as well. You also can aggregate some of the graph views by Day, Week, and Month view.
